i have a question on Lolita Fashion?
im going to design one on a contest..
the categories are “contemporary” and “traditional”
so which is it?
It’s definitely contemporary. But here’s a little history. I did a project on the fashion/am totally obsessed.
Lolita is a fashion that usually has knee length, puffy skirts, petticoats, frills, lace, and an overall beautiful yet modest doll-like essence. It started in the 80s. Goth, Punk, and Rock music had recently moved from the West to Japan, and that formed Visual Kei, music with artists dressed in elaborate outfits of Goth and Punk to the next level. Gothic Lolita formed from feminizing the Gothic fashion and taking more influence from its older roots, the Victorian Era, the Edwardian Era, and Rococo (of France.) No one person can be credited for creating the fashion, but Mana of the band Malice Mizer is often credited for making the style popular in the 90s.
Lolita soon formed into different styles, other than Gothic Lolita. Many often misuse the term “Gothic Lolita” to label all forms of Lolita, but Sweet Lolita is not Gothic. Here are some of the main styles (which can be mixed together, such as mixing Sweet and Punk.):
Sweet Lolita – pastel and bright colours, very candy like… Currently the most popular Lolita style.
Punk Lolita – adding elements of the Punk fashion into Lolita fashion… For example, one might wear a Lolita skirt with a punk shirt and punk accessories.
Classic Lolita – muted colours, often more passive than the other styles of Lolita…
Boystyle – Essentially all of the element of Loli but with pants!
There are many other categories of Lolita, but it would take forever to list… Just to name a few… Wa, Country, Hime, Pirate…
Unlike what many believe, manga/anime and Lolita have nothing to do with each other. As I stated before Lolita comes from music, not anime. And anime may have characters that are Lolita, but there honestly are quite scarce compared to the amount of anime out there. But really…If you cosplay as a samurai warrior, does that mean you are an actual samurai warrior?
